EDUCTATION. MOTIVATION. PRESERVATION.

2nd Maryland Co. D

"Maryland Cadet Program"

Education, Motivation, Preservation

The concepts of education, motivation, and preservation drive our work as Company D Cadets.

To begin, our work is to remember our nation’s history as accurately as possible by researching, reading, and investigating primary sources.  Maryland’s unique role in the Civil War is an important focus of our studies.

Secondly, our work as students of history  is to find motivation in the actions of our ancestors.  Motivation to save the past for the future.  Motivation to help our fellow man.  Motivation to make this world a better place for everyone.

Most importantly, our work is to preserve the gems of history for all to see, remember, enjoy, and learn about.  From primary documents such as letters, photographs, and journals to original artifacts to battlefields and monuments our work is to save, share, and teach.

Our work will reveal to the Company D Cadets the influence history has on our daily lives and the importance of learning from history and preserving it for ourselves and future generations.

2018 Events: (Dates TBD)

Gettysburg Visitor’s Center & Culp’s Hill Tour (education)

At this event, Cadets will learn about the Civil War by viewing the film, cyclorama, & museum inside the Gettysburg Visitor’s Center.  Then they will participate in a walking tour of Culp’s Hill in which they will focus on Maryland’s involvement in this battle.  Activities will be provided and designed so that Cadets learn about the war and also find motivation to preserve and share what they’ve learned.

Camp Event with Company D (motivation)

At this event, Cadets will visit the Company D camp to learn about everyday life of a soldier.  They will gather motivation from drilling and marching.  The unique approach of incorporating technology will allow Cadets to learn in the Interactive Tent.  Finally, Cadets will get opportunities to discuss with re-enactors any questions about the war.    Activities will be provided and designed so that Cadets are motivated into action as they learn about the life of the soldier.

Harper’s Ferry Tour (preservation)

At this event, Cadets will visit the federal arsenal of Harper’s Ferry and participate in a tour of the town.  This will allow Cadets to see first hand how the town has preserved the history for people to learn and remember.  Activities will be provided and designed so that Cadets learn about preservation and are motivated to begin educating others of the unique history of Maryland.

Annual Adopt-a Family (service activity)

At this event, Cadets will help to wrap boxes and prepare signs to promote the adopt-a-family program that Company D participates with each year.  This participation will count toward the Cadet’s service learning graduation requirements if they are students in the state of Maryland.
